There is a crucial difference between self-organization and adaptivity, however. Whereas self-organization is driven primarily by internal constraints, adaptivity is driven by external constraints, so the system has to be open. A system may self-organize bu not be adaptive; it is independent of its surroundings -- that is, closed (Johnson, 2001).
